What are the dos and don'ts after hip replacement?

 Total Hip Replacement surgery's success depends largely on how well you follow the doctor's instructions during the recovery period, especially during the initial few weeks post-surgery.

1) Wound care: You might have sutures or staples at the surgical site till approximately 2 weeks post-surgery. Till then, don't let the wound get wet until it gets completely sealed and dried. Preferably, continue bandaging the wound to prevent irritation from clothes or stockings.

2) Diet: Generally, you might feel some loss of your regular appetite. Taking a balanced diet, many times with an iron tonic is vital for promoting regular healing of tissues and regaining muscle strength. Ensure drinking lots of fluids.

3) Physical Activity: Exercise is a crucial part of care at home, especially during the initial few weeks post Total Hip Replacement Surgery. You should gain the capacity to resume the majority of your normal activities that are the light within 3-6 weeks after surgery. You may experience some discomfort while performing your activities and at night for a few weeks, but it is natural and should not be a cause of concern. Your physical activity regimen should consist of a measured walking program to gradually raise your movement, beginning at home and later outdoors. You should also resume other routine household chores gradually.

4) However, there are certain precautions you need to follow depending on your surgery's nature and as advised by your PT. Some common precautions are as follows after Total Hip Replacement:

a) Don't cross your legs from the knees for 6 to 8 weeks, at least.

 b) Don't elevate your knee higher than your hip.

c) Don't lean in a forward position during sitting or while you want to sit.

d) Don't try to pick anything from the floor in the sitting position.

e) Don't excessively turn your feet inward or outwards while bending down.

f) Don't bend at the waist more than 90 degrees.

g) Keep the legs facing forward.

h) Keep the operated leg in front while sitting or standing.
